Our Story

where it all began... (jenny, brandon, rachel, jon, missy, chris)

Starting in 2012, Jenny and her college friends started reuniting once a year in a new city or new country, dubbed "Friendcation". For the second year, Jenny's friend Missy suggested that the group should go on a week long cruise leaving from Miami in March 2013. While booking the staterooms, through a very confusing phone conference of the five vacation attendees, Chris accidentally booked a double stateroom for himself. As the trip got closer, Chris realized his error and, on very short notice, needed to invite another person to join. As Chris describes it, his criteria were "Someone fun. And, someone with a passport". At the time, Chris lived in Austin and worked with Brandon, who just so happened to fit the criteria and accepted the invitation.

The group started the trip by spending a few days in Ft. Lauderdale before embarking on the cruise. Meeting up at the hotel for the first night of the trip were Rachel, Brandon, Chris and Jenny (who lived in Milwaukee at the time). Everyone met up in the lobby, where Brandon and Jenny shook hands and introduced themselves - they felt a connection right away. While on the cruise, Brandon fit right in with the group and both Brandon and Jenny found themselves spending as much time together as they could.

During the end of the trip, Rachel had invited Brandon, an avid skier, out to Denver the following month to go skiing. Sensing that they had hit it off so well during the cruise, she also invited Jenny out for the weekend. When they got home to their respective cities after the cruise, they began to tell their friends about each other and how excited they were to meet up in Denver and see each other again. During the month in-between, Brandon and Jenny kept in touch and, in the spirit of their competitive natures, texted each other about whose March Madness bracket was better and about their upcoming trip to Denver.

Once in Denver, Brandon and Jenny knew that they wanted to be together, despite the distance, and immediately made plans for Brandon to visit Jenny in Milwaukee a month later. While dating long-distance, they met up at least once a month either in each other's city or in a new city. Less than a year after the "happy accident" of meeting each other, Brandon asked Jenny to move down to Austin; and in July 2014, they moved Jenny across the country to her new home (and, yes, she loves the heat).

bob and jonny

or the story of how we became known as bob and jonny...

Jenny, or Jonny, received the nickname quite by accident. Unbeknownst to her, she has an accent to Texans. So much so that words such as bag, tag...you get the idea, always elicit a laugh from friends and Brandon (every time), followed by an attempt to get her to say the word again. On Jenny's first trip to Texas to meet Brandon's family, she was introducing herself and said "I'm Jenny", which was followed by an uncomfortable silence and shared looks of confusion. One family member spoke up and asked "Did you say Jonny?" Little did Jenny know that this would not be the last time she was heard to say Jonny instead of Jenny.

Brandon, or Bob, has an affinity for the letter "B", palindromes, and brevity. When asked to give his name when ordering at restaurants or coffee shops, he found it easier to use Bob as his name instead of having to spell Brandon (is it an "e" or an "o"...).

Brandon's and Jenny's nicknames were further fueled by their friend Patrick, who has a gift for creating nicknames for everyone, and for ensuring that they stick.
